French designer Christophe Come is a modern-day alchemist, transforming quotidian materials into objects of transcendent grace. His heavenly Oblique screen, above, constructed of glass lenses suspended in an iron lattice, is inspired by traditional Asian design.

“For years, I’ve been fascinated by Japanese folding screens and the way they establish permeable boundaries between spaces,” he says. Like most of Come’s creations, the luminous screen blurs the line between functional design and objet d’art.

He makes his West Coast debut this month at Duke & Duke, a new gallery established by decorator Michael Smith and partner Maya McLaughlin, in a solo show in association with New York dealer Cristina Grajales. Price upon request. Sept. 15–Nov. 11. 8527 Melrose Ave., 310-657-0611, —Mayer Rus
