This seems like a pointless list. Criteria for naming the greatest beauty are subject to matters of taste etc, but what is the essential question here? A great beauty someone who was widely recognised as a great beauty at her time and had a certain impact on beauty trends, style and fashion with a world-wide impact. Bearing this in mind, with all due respect to Isabelel Adjani, one cannoty say that she is the supreme beauty of all times. I would rather recognize great beauties with tremendous impact on their times like the Divine Greta Grabo. Other great beauties: Ava Gardner, Vivien Leigh, Lz Taylor and Rita Hayworth.

Posted by: marcel | 02/10/2011 at 11:42 AM
Ok, she's a 70's soft porn icon, but in my view the most beautiful woman in film: Silvia Kristel. See Emmanuelle 1, 2 & 3 and admire. And she is Dutch.
Posted by: Fantast_NL | 02/10/2011 at 11:43 AM
Jane Fonda! One of the few who is still very very beautiful.

She's the best and most beautiful actress.
Posted by: Colinda | 02/10/2011 at 11:49 AM
Gong LI is very nice indeed and she would be the first Asian woman in the list.
Posted by: Alain | 02/10/2011 at 11:54 AM
You missed a lot. Lauren Bacall, Isabella Rosselini and Ingrid Bergman to name a few.
Posted by: steeb | 02/10/2011 at 12:00 PM
Adjani
Taylor
Cardinale
Posted by: Athos Tasca | 02/10/2011 at 12:06 PM
Here are some names to add to the list:
Elisha Cuthbert, Jennifer love Hewitt, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Beckinsale, Elisabeth Shue.
Posted by: Michiel | 02/10/2011 at 12:11 PM
Jeez, I think the list says a lot more about the list maker(s) than about the real beauties of film. And where is the diversity? Where are Lucy Liu, Angela Basset, Vanessa Williams, Michelle Yeoh, Eva Mendes Gong Li, Jada Pinkett, Lena Horne, Pam Grier, Ziyi Zhang, Nia Long, Jessica Alba. The list goes on. All of them with much longer careers and certainly more gorgeous than many of the women in this list (Blake Lively... really??? what's she doing there)
Posted by: Tamara | 02/10/2011 at 12:52 PM
Claire Forlani?
Posted by: AKdZ | 02/10/2011 at 12:55 PM
I voted Natalie Portman but where are: Carole Bouquet, Famke Jansen & Natasha Henstridge
Posted by: Daniel Noorloos | 02/10/2011 at 02:04 PM
Hedy Lamarr (1913-2000), called "The Most Beautiful Woman in Film"!!!
p.s. Too bad this List is a joke, like any other.....
Posted by: Panbello | 02/10/2011 at 03:57 PM
Sarah Michelle Gellar. My first crush.
Posted by: Jeroen | 02/10/2011 at 04:15 PM
I miss Helen Hunt....
Posted by: Ronald | 02/10/2011 at 04:27 PM
Raquel Welch please !!
or
Sandra Bullock for instance !!
Posted by: biertje1150 | 02/10/2011 at 04:34 PM
No Lauren Bacall, no Ingrid Bergman, and no Isabella Rosselini among others! Wow. Somebody did not do their homework.
Posted by: steeb | 02/10/2011 at 05:02 PM
Elizabeth Taylor is the only one who should be on this list. No one can even come close.
Posted by: Gayle | 02/10/2011 at 05:21 PM
To those who think this list is a top 50... it's NOT.
It's very obvious that it's in alphabetical order.
Anyway, IMO Cate Blanchett(!) / Julie Andrews / Liv Tyler / Thandie Newton should be on this list
Posted by: TK | 02/10/2011 at 05:24 PM
LAUREN BECAL and ROMY SCHNEIDER
Posted by: Leila | 02/10/2011 at 06:15 PM
Robin Wright
Posted by: Baahjun | 02/10/2011 at 07:15 PM
Audrey Tatou, Keira Knightley, Liv Tyler, Winona Ryder, Diane Kruger, Anna Karina!!!!!!!

how about Faye Reagan
Posted by: dave sadler | 02/10/2011 at 07:31 PM
Also, Scarlett Johansson and Zhang Ziyi, Paz Vega. Pleasantly surprised to see you included Eva Green. and Rachel Weisz.
Posted by: Jessica | 02/10/2011 at 07:37 PM
Great list! Ignore some of the cruel comments here...some people are a bit on the edge. Love including Cardinale, Brooks, Merle and Dandridge, etc. Love the horizontal spread of Audrey and CC. Some of us have seen all act in movies...so a fair judgement is in order. But something to think about...Farrah, Joan Crawford, Rachel Weisz, Beyonce, Pinto, Blake Lively and Anne Hathaway shouldn't be on this list. Replace them with Raquel Welch, Gina Lollobrigida, Ingrid Bergman, Lena Horne, Nicole Kidman, and Aishwarya Rai/Ursula Andress/Ann-Margret. And I would take Olivia deHavilland over Jennifer Lopez or Angelina Jolie. If Farrah, pick Jaclyn Smith instead but neither really made cinema. If Pinto, replace with Rai. Of the young actresses, easily Megan Fox.
Posted by: FilmDog | 02/10/2011 at 08:59 PM
Strictly based on looks, you missed the boat big time. Post WW2: Jessica Biel, Jessica Pare, Estella Warren, Kelly Brook, Winona Ryder, Sydney Rome, Kathryn Harrold, Leslie Anne Downe, Jacqueline Bisset, Jenny Wright, Stephane Audran, Kristin Kreuk, Natasha Henstridge, and dozens more. Thanks for Virna Lisi anyway.
Posted by: benito | 02/10/2011 at 09:04 PM
I believe that you should have included Kristen Stewart and Amanda Seyfreid
on this list.
The up and coming actresses deserve some recognition as well.
Posted by: MT | 02/10/2011 at 10:08 PM
Geena Davis!?
Posted by: bananabella | 02/10/2011 at 10:23 PM
Sandra Bullock!!!!!!!!
She beautiful outside and INSIDE!!!!!!!
I see Beyonce, she has acted but first of all she's a singer...
In that case i would have voted Paula Abdul, who also did some acting in some Series and a very moving film called Touched by Evil.
She's my ultime nr 1 and still a great inspiration for all the lovesongs I create....
Posted by: Paul van der Werf | 02/10/2011 at 11:54 PM

Great to see Monica Bellucci in here.
Posted by: Malena | 02/11/2011 at 04:42 AM
What a shame that almost all women are white and often blond. Women such as Aiswarya Ray are gorgeous but for some reason don't make it on the list.
Posted by: Usha | 02/11/2011 at 05:36 AM
A smile appears on my face seeing all those comments criticizing the order of the list..
Did none of you see it is in an alphabetical order? The purpose of voting is that there can be a 'decisive' list..
With every shortlist there are bound to be missing names. Meg Ryan for instance..
Posted by: Jeroen, Amsterdam | 02/11/2011 at 05:57 AM
Milla Jovovich
Posted by: T 'DD" Donker | 02/11/2011 at 06:10 AM
How on earth did you miss Ingrid Bergman and Lauren Bacall?
Posted by: FilmTeacher | 02/11/2011 at 06:17 AM
Salma at nr 20, I can live with that but why not showing "From Dusk Till Dawn".....(before she changes in a vampire....pffff)
Posted by: Martijn Oostveen | 02/11/2011 at 06:18 AM
How can you forget the fascinating portrayal of Elf maiden Arwen Undómiel: LIV TYLER....!!!
and indeed what about: Kate Winslet, Laren Bacall, Vivian Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Anna May Wong, Jacqueline Bisset, Cate Blanchett, Zhang Ziyi, Julianne Moore, Winona Ryder, Cameron Diaz, Li Gong, Jane Fonda, Raquel Welch, Scarlett Johanson, Natasja Kinski, Ingrid Bergman, Sharon Tate, Candice Bergen, Meryl Streep, a.s.o...... better next time a Top-100 and omit the popstars.
Hope you don't mind I didn't vote this time.
Posted by: Jan Elmendorp but still TheWorldKeepsTurning | 02/11/2011 at 06:51 AM
OEPS, I forgot Aishwarya Rai and our own Famke Janssen..!

Posted by: claudine willis | 02/11/2011 at 08:27 AM
What about Sophie Marceau, Virginie Ledoyen, Nastassja Kinski, Gong Li ?
Posted by: Emilie | 02/11/2011 at 08:39 AM
Natalie Portman in and Ann-Margaret out?
REALLY?
REALLY!
Somebody at the Times needs to talk to the folks at AMC and TCM about this. I know that you can't get everyone on a '50' list like this - and you REALLY can't do it right if you are skewing to actresses that have been in film only for the past 20 years (yes there are a few pre 1990 actresses, but not nearly enough on this list)
Posted by: AVIDFAN | 02/11/2011 at 08:43 AM
Where's Jessica Alba??? This list must be a joke...
Posted by: Johnson | 02/11/2011 at 11:02 AM
I agree about Ingrid Bergman. Jennifer Lopez and no Ingrid Bergman? Also, Danielle Darrieux was gorgeous, although she only made a few movies.
Posted by: Effie | 02/11/2011 at 02:38 PM
Guess beauty is a different matter to me.... I like strong women with a sense of humor. So: Jodie Foster, Isabelle Rosselini, Lauren Bacall, Catherine Deneuve
Posted by: ppb | 02/11/2011 at 05:36 PM
Alicia Silverstone for sure!
Posted by: RAAI | 02/11/2011 at 05:55 PM
I miss in this list the following women:
Lauren Bacall
Ingrid Bergman
Debra Winger
Meg Ryan
Sean Young
Daryl Hannah
Jodie Foster
Gwyneth Paltrow
Liv Tyler
They all touch my hart with their stunning beauty and with their acting performances.
Posted by: C. Monteiro | 02/11/2011 at 10:54 PM
This is such a ridiculous list. Blake Lively, Beyonce, Jeniffer Lopez, Natalie Portman and Anne Hataway are just average pretty. And the order is a total joke.
Posted by: Leah B | 02/11/2011 at 11:46 PM
Monica Bellucci is more beautiful than Isabelle Adjani. Who put her at number 4? It's ridiculous!
Posted by: Nuca | 02/12/2011 at 01:12 AM
Juliette Lewis!
Posted by: Cor Smit | 02/12/2011 at 04:15 AM
It would have to be GeneTierney, pity you did not show clip from ''Leave Her To Heaven''
Posted by: HAPPYTHELEAF | 02/12/2011 at 05:00 AM
JULIA ROBERTS is N° 1 FOR ME!!!!
Posted by: dario | 02/12/2011 at 08:13 AM
You forgot Dolores Del Rio, Olivia De Havilland, Loretta Young, Linda Darnell.
Posted by: stefa | 02/12/2011 at 09:55 AM
Julia Roberts is one of the best actresses Hollywood has!
But, sure, in this list many other names are missing...
Posted by: Max P. | 02/12/2011 at 10:09 AM
Good list but how could you forget Pam Grier. Honorable mentions, Eva Mendes, Scarlet Johanson, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria.
Posted by: Jamal El-Amin | 02/12/2011 at 03:03 PM
Alicia Silverstone
Posted by: RAAI | 02/12/2011 at 10:23 PM
Jenifer Lopez is missing. Wonder why? She is a major celeb.
Posted by: mary | 02/13/2011 at 01:54 AM
You put Angelina Jolie after anne hathaway/? Pfft, are you serious? after jennifer connely and brigitte bardot? omg....
I don't think blake lively is that beautiful or such an actress...or Jlo and Beyonce..looool
The list is a disgrace, you better remake it asap
Posted by: Sim | 02/13/2011 at 06:53 AM
GONG LI.....so many of your picks are so NOT beautiful, horse face Hathaway,
Jenny from the block?
But Isabelle Adjani has always been my fav so you score big on that one.
Posted by: lovelyrita1 | 02/13/2011 at 01:28 PM
Calling Julia Roberts one of the 50 great beauties of film is like calling Fabian one of the greatest singers of all time or Morgan Fairchild one of the 50 great actresses. It is a joke.
Posted by: Woody McBreairty | 02/13/2011 at 09:42 PM
Sandra Milo, Linda Darnell, Kay Francis, Isabella Rosselini, Theresa Russell, Sean Young, the young Helen Mirren, Lynn Collins in The Merchant of Venice, and because she's my personal favorite: Jennifer Hudson.
Posted by: RobertRays | 02/14/2011 at 02:42 AM
Oh yeah, and Gina Lollobrigida.
Posted by: RobertRays | 02/14/2011 at 02:44 AM
Jamie Lee Curtis!!!!
Posted by: Paul | 02/14/2011 at 02:50 AM
First the list is by alphabet not ranking. But leaving out Raquel Welch is just crazy.
Posted by: Mr Carl | 02/14/2011 at 06:04 AM
Jessica Alba
Jessica Biel
Sarah Chalke
Unknown but beautiful:
Sarah Wright
Brittany Snow
Odette Yustman
Posted by: Thomas | 02/14/2011 at 06:30 AM
A list put together by a movie illiterate. Ingrid Bergman? Lauren Bacall? Anita Ekberg? Ann Margaret?
Dolores del Rio? Rita Hayworth?
Not present. Who the hell is Blake Lively?
Posted by: Dude1 | 02/14/2011 at 06:30 AM
What about Sacarlett Johansson?
Posted by: Juan Carlos More | 02/14/2011 at 06:45 AM
Good grief... this is gotta be the worst such list I've seen in my life!
Some of the most beautiful actresses of all time are ranked low in the list (and some missing entirely)...
Ali McGraw?
Freida Pinto?
JULIA ROBERTS? Seriously? She is ranked above Natalie Wood, Brooke Shields or Catherine Zeta Jones or Gene Tierney, not to mention other beauties?
And where is Winona Ryder, one of the most exquisite faces ever to appear on film?
Posted by: Pretty Polly | 02/14/2011 at 11:35 AM
Peggy Lipton and Diane Caroll
Posted by: shereese maynard | 02/14/2011 at 03:06 PM
Freida Pinto? I don't think so! India is full of beautiful actresses (Rani Mukerji, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif etc etc etc) and you pick Freida Pinto? The girl has nothing going for her, absolute nonsense.
Posted by: Nadeem | 02/15/2011 at 08:10 AM
Was that Nathalie Portman or a Clive Owen sample? He blows her away. She's better crying.
Milla is hard to exclude given her popularity and magnetism.
And to not include Ziyi Zhang is a mistake, and not for affirmative action reasons either.
No offense to Blake Lively, but what's your thinking?
Posted by: Janson | 02/15/2011 at 08:11 PM
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI~!
(Ingrid Bergman's daugher:)
Posted by: jackiejuniper | 02/15/2011 at 08:13 PM
Jullie Andrews, She's gorgeous yesterday, today and for years to come
Posted by: Philip | 02/16/2011 at 06:17 AM
No Veronica Lake?? Laren Becall?? But you have Blake Lively and Rachel Weiz?? Really? Those are pretty big omissions.
Posted by: J | 02/16/2011 at 10:34 AM
