The Style List—May 2010

INTO THE SHALLOW END
Our favorite swimsuits of the season are true jaw-droppers. Peekaboo cutouts, sexy slashes and provocative dashes are sure to have heads turning, but a small trade-off is required: They’re not the most cannonball-friendly options, but then, who needs the deep end anyway? Wear one with confidence, and you won’t be reduced to stupid human pool tricks to grab all the attention.
Last year, archaeologists uncovered the Lost Mayan City of Mirador in a remote Guatemalan jungle. In it stood La Danta, an ancient temple rising 230 feet into the sky, hailed as one of Earth’s grandest pyramids. Shoe designer Chrissie Morris showed her enthusiasm by translating La Danta into the Dora, a metal-studded lace-up sandal of interlocking suede and napa-leather triangles. It’s this sort of outside-the-shoe-box thinking that earned Morris boutique representation in 18 countries and her industry’s most coveted honors. Even the design-obsessed Mayans would be duly impressed. $1,625. Zainab, 7021 Melrose Ave., L.A., 323-930-8951 zainabonline.com.
YOU MUST MEET
INTRODUCING: Frédérique Constant Junior. HOW MANY “HELLO, MY NAME IS…” TAGS? Two—one for the silver dial with brown strap, the other for the black-on-black model. WHY THE DRUMROLL? The renowned Geneva-based watchmaker claims these beauts are the first luxury timepieces designed exclusively for boys 12 to 16. No doubt, any adolescent male would be thrilled to receive just such a treasure for, say, his graduation or bar mitzvah, but the shrunken size will also appeal to women who seek a men’s-style watch without the bulk. PRICE: Silver dial, $725; black on black, $650. WHERE: Polacheck’s Jewelers, Sherman Oaks Fashion Square, 14006 Riverside Dr., 818-986-2240
THE THROWBACK: Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano soap. THERE’S OLD: The fragrance in this sudser was created more than 100 years ago as an homage to the coveted Toscano cigar. AND THEN THERE’S OLD: SMN was started by Dominican monks in 1221 and went public almost 400 years later. HIS & HERS: Despite coming in a brown box and having the guy-leaning notes of tobacco and leather, hints of amber, vanilla, pear, bergamot and jasmine will make this popular with the ladies, too. PRICE: $30. Santa Maria Novella, 8411 Melrose Pl., L.A., 323-651-3754
FACTORS: Lanvin x Acne. LEFT OF THE MULTIPLICATION SIGN: Light Blue Denim One Shoulder Dress. CONSTRUCT: Following their phenomenally successful collaboration last year, Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz and Acne’s Jonny Johansson put their stylish heads together anew to present another collection of street-meets-couture designs. THE NUMBER COMPUTES: Denim is a huge trend this spring, but comfort is de rigueur every year, which makes this the season’s nearly perfect one-piece. ADDITIONAL POINTS: For versatility, add a sweater during work hours, then doff it for happy hour. PRICE: $983. WHERE: Barneys New York, 9570 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310-276-4400
